Magnification cross-sections of gravitational lensing by galaxies in general FLRW cosmologies

چکیده
For a wide variety of cosmological models characterized by the cosmic mass density ΩM and the normalized cosmological constant ΩΛ, we derive an analytic expression for the estimate of magnification cross-sections by an ensemble of isothermal spheres as models of galactic mass distributions. This provides a simple approach to demonstrate how the lensing probability by galaxies depends on the cosmological parameters. An immediate consequence is that, while a non-zero cosmological constant indeed leads to a significant increase of the lensing probability as it has been shown in the literature, only a small fraction of sky to z ∼ 3 can be moderately (μ ∼ 1.3) lensed by galaxies even in aΛ-dominated flat universe. Therefore, whether or not there is a nonzero cosmological constant, it is unlikely that the overall quasar counts have been seriously contaminated by the presence of galactic lenses.

Lensing Magnification and QSO-Galaxy Cross-Correlations: Observations, Theory and Simulations
We review observations and gravitational lensing theory related to the magnification of background QSOs by intervening overdensities, and the induced cross-correlation between sources and foreground galaxies. We pay special attention to simulations, and present some preliminary results from high resolution cluster simulations, which show the role of the halo core and substructure on non-linear ...
متن کاملDo the lensing cross - sections of faint galaxies cover the whole sky ?
Very deep galaxy surveys have revealed a considerably large population of faint galaxies, which leads to the speculation that all distant objects are moderately magnified by the gravitational lensing effects of galaxies (Fried 1997). In this letter, we present a simple estimate of the lensing amplitudes by all galaxies up to redshift z = 2 in terms of galaxy merging and answer the question whet...

متن کاملQSO Lensing Magnification by Galaxies and Galaxy Groups
We develop a new and more realistic approach to calculate QSO-galaxy and QSOgroup of galaxies correlations due to gravitational lensing. We have simulated both the matter and light (galaxy) distributions in a wedge of the universe and calculated the gravitational lensing magnification caused by the mass along the line of sight of galaxies and galaxy groups identified in sky surveys. A large vol...
متن کاملEffects of Dust on Gravitational Lensing by Spiral Galaxies
Gravitational lensing of an optical QSO by a spiral galaxy is often counteracted by dust obscuration, since the line-of-sight to the QSO passes close to the center of the galactic disk. The dust in the lens is likely to be correlated with neutral hydrogen, which in turn should leave a Lyα absorption signature on the QSO spectrum. We use the estimated dust-to-gas ratio of the Milky–Way galaxy as...
